Bathroom Tiles
Today, you can do bathroom renovation with a variety of bathroom tiles. The selection is so big that essentially the most grumpy lady of the house will find something to her liking.
Bathroom Tile Materials
You can choose to install:
- Marble bathroom tile
- Travertine bathroom tile
- Limestone bathroom tile
- Granite bathroom tile
- Slate bathroom tile
- Ceramic and porcelain bathroom tile
All of the above bathroom tile materials can be used for floors and the walls. However, the constructions of a bathroom tile for the floor will differ from that used on the wall. Thus, even though both products apply the same material, they cannot be used interchangeably. Always ask experts if the product is suitable for your application.
The Size of a Bathroom Tile
The bathroom tile size can range from 1 square inch to 576 square inches of a surface area.
The smallest are used for mosaic patterns, the largest for the floors.
If you decide to install granite tiles for the bathroom floor then it is better to use smaller sized-products.
Polished granite has a very little friction (especially when wet) which can lead to accidents.
What's more, smaller sizes are generally cheaper for the same area than the larger counterparts.
If you cannot part with your larger-sized, floor-granite tiles then do not polish them.
Bathroom Tile Made of Marble and Limestone
Marble and limestone are great materials for floors and even walls.
They provide an impression of luxury and wealth.
At the same time the bathroom tile has some warmth and lovely feeling.
Unfortunately, the product is very expensive.
Contrary to the granite, the marble, limestone and travertine have a higher friction coefficient (especially when they are honed).
However, these products do have problem with etching.
Nonetheless, etching can be resolved with dedicated cleaning products.
Bathroom Tile Made of Slate
Slate has an interesting appearance. The material was popular in 70s when home owners (some of them being the hippie enthusiasts) wanted "the back to the nature" style. I like slate because it shows sturdiness. However, despite the appearance, the material is brittle and can crack. Nonetheless, the slate bathroom tile is affordable for those very tight budgets.
Bathroom Tile Made of Ceramic and Porcelaine
Both ceramic and porcelaine can be used as a floor or a wall bathroom tile.
However, the same material does not mean it is the same product.
Ceramic and porcelain bathroom tiles should be used as per their application.
Thus, wall tiles belong to walls and the floor ones to... (well you get the idea).
Ceramic material is more brittle than porcelain.
However, porcelain bathroom tiles are more expensive.
If you decide to use one of the above materials for the floor then porcelain is the preferred choice.
To save some money, you can use ceramic tiles for the wall.
Bathroom Tile Prices
Porcelain tiles are about $30 per meter square. The same applies for top quality ceramic products. Marble tiles sell for about $80-$90 a meter square. The price for the granite is about $50 cheaper.
