Water Heater Installation
If you are building a new home then the water heater installation is not your problem.
Builder is responsible for this job.
However, when you buy a new water heater unit or replace the old one then this becomes your headache.
The rule is: pay money to professionals and do not brave the project yourself.
Nevertheless, there are occasions when water heater installation by the owner can be justified.
This is particularly true in remote areas where finding a licensed plumber in the vicinity is difficult.
Whatever the situation is, you need to decide on the size, capacity and energy rating for the appliance to be installed.
Safety Measures Before Water Heater Installation
Better be safe then sorry... There are potential dangers which can result from improper water heater installation. Firstly, use procedures and materials the code allows. Switch of the gas and the electricity supply for the unit. Finally, switch off the water supply. Ensure that area is properly prepared for water heater installation (clean debris, remove dangerous objects and obstacles).
Water Heater Installation - Piping
Move your new water heater into position. Ensure that piping (especially the gas vent) can reach the unit without a problem. Install the heater's new draft hood (storage gas heaters). Ensure that vents are not obstructed and set according to the specifications. Connect hot and cold water plumbing. The easiest is to use flex connectors. Whatever the type of the pipe you use, it is important to fit the cold water gate valve. This is important for both tuning as well as emergency.
Water Heater Installation - Relief Valve
The relief valve is a crucial element to control both the temperature and pressure of the hot water heater. The relief valve lets off excess heat and water automatically. Again, use the model's instruction to place the appropriate valve into the unit.
Water Heater Installation - Gas and Electricity Connection
The last step is to connect gas and electricity. Lets discuss the gas connection first. Connect the gas flex connector collar to the flare adapter. Tighten it well but do not use nylon tape or sealants. Once completed, install the thermostat and let the gas in. As for the electrical wiring - ensure that wires are at minimum the right size. You need to connect life, neutral and earth as specified by the specifications. Remember, water heaters often do not have transformers and incorrect wiring may be dangerous.
Water Heater Installation - Maintenance
Check the relief valve from time to time. Ensure that it opens and then closes. Check safety code in the area. City council should provide necessary information about expected maintenance of household plumbing.
